Whether you're an athlete or someone who spends most of the day sitting at a desk, back pain can affect anyone. This article will help you understand how your back works, learn why it might be causing you discomfort and provide you with actionable steps to manage and prevent any pain.

Did you know?
Spinal cartilage is rich in water content, which can cause it to change shape under pressure due to gravity and revert when pressure diminishes. This is why you may be slightly taller in the morning than at nighttime, as gravity applies pressure to your spine throughout the day.
How your back works
Your back is a remarkable structure supporting your whole body, with a wide range of muscles and bones that work together to provide essential functions. The main supporting structure in your back is your spinal column. There are 12 spinal bones in your upper back and mid back and 5 in your lower back, all of which are connected by intervertebral discs.
These bones are further reinforced and supported by an intricate system of muscles, ligaments and tendons, providing flexibility and strength to your back. This system allows you to move, maintain good posture and supports your weight, enabling you to carry out everyday activities with ease.

Did you know?
Surprisingly, sitting can put more strain on your spine than standing. When you sit, the pressure on the disc between your vertebrae is 40% greater than when you stand. This happens because standing maintains the natural curve of your lower back, which spreads the compression force across your whole spine.
What to do and not do?
When experiencing back pain, try using ice and heat, stretching, and, most importantly, maintaining good posture.
Avoid activities that may intensify your pain and refrain from prolonged periods of bed rest or sitting with poor posture, as these can exacerbate your symptoms.

Common causes of
back pain
Back pain can result from various conditions, including muscle sprain, a slipped disc, degeneration, inflammation, facet joint pain and fracture. You can explore common causes in detail here.

Did you know?
The spine is home to an impressive group of more than 120 muscles, which make up a big part of the 639 skeletal muscles in the human body. This extensive network of muscles gives the spine great flexibility.
Recovery, prevention, &
duration of pain
Suitable exercises, rest and lifestyle adjustments are crucial in managing back pain. Your VIDA Pain Coach program offers various exercises tailored for recovery and prevention, but it's essential to consult a healthcare professional before beginning any new regimen.
The duration of back pain can vary significantly. Mild cases such as muscle strain might improve within days or weeks, whereas severe or chronic conditions like degeneration, inflammation and fracture could last for several weeks or months. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, adequate sleep, a balanced diet and stress management play a pivotal role in back pain recovery and prevention.

Knowing when to seek help
While some back pain can be managed at home, if you suffer from severe pain, numbness of your limbs, or inability to control your bowel and bladder, you should seek immediate medical attention. Persistent pain, even if not severe, also warrants a check-up.
